چکیده

Uncertainties and risks in the decision making process are abundant in the area of environmental economics, irrespective of whether the problems being discussed are local or global. This paper uses laboratory evidence from public goods games to examine how in payoff equivalent situations, decision makers contribute towards local or global environmental goods, in the presence of risk and uncertainties in the provision of these goods. We use a within subject design that allows for comparisons across seven different treatments in which subjects are exposed to internal (strategic) and external (environmental) risk and uncertainty. Our results show that the location of the risk and uncertainty matters, with subjects moving away from the external uncertainty in favor of internal uncertainty, when that uncertainty is associated with the local environmental good. When the uncertainty relates to the global environmental good, subjects face both external and internal uncertainty on the same good leading to a significant drop in contributions. We find that in the presence of risk and uncertainty subjects use feedback from other members of their group when deciding about future contributions. The reward for research and development and innovation is captured in the experimental design by the increased probability of obtaining the desired outcome in the endogenous probability treatment. Subjects seem to understand this incentive and contribute more towards global goods in this treatment. JEL classification: C91, Q00, H41.

Assessment and Prioritizing the Risks of Urban Rail Transportation by Using Grey Analytical Hierarchy Process (GAHP)

Some incidents in urban railway systems affect the function of the subway’s company adversely and they could disorder the services. These events may inflict irreparable damage to passengers, employees and equipment. By recognizing the hazards existing in this type of transportation system and evaluating and prioritizing risks, we can perform appropriate actions to reduce the probability and sev...

Information Technology Product Bundling in the Presence of Complementarities, Quality Uncertainty, and Network Effects: An Agent-Based Approach

Bundling of information technology products and services is prevalent in markets for information goods, telecommunication services, computer hardware, and software goods. However, factors affecting consumers’ choice of IT product bundles, and the resultant impacts to markets, have not been clearly documented in the information systems literature. In this paper, we develop agent-based simulation...

Methods for Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis. Review and recommendations for implementation in Ecolego

In this paper we review several uncertainty and sensitivity methods available in the literature and provide recommendations for implementing some of these methods in Ecolego. Predictive models used in the assessment of protection of the environment from ionising radiation present some extreme characteristics that make uncertainty and sensitivity analysis a non-trivial task. Those characteristic...

Dangerous climate change and collective action: comment on "climate change governance, cooperation and self-organization" by Jorge M. Pacheco, Vítor V. Vasconcelos, and Francisco C. Santos.

Climate change perhaps is the greatest collective action problem mankind has ever faced and the international community is still at a loss for how to get the ever rising greenhouse gas emissions under control. Does the risk of crossing a “dangerous” climate threshold improve the prospects of collective action? A literature has recently developed to answer this question. Using game theoretic mod...
